Dona and I
Jul. 1st, 2005 08:33 pmDona is sleeping on my feet. She loves to do that. I love her to do so. Our relationship is bizarre...somehow. She hates to see me sitting here, in front of Kanon. That's why she's misbehaved so much lately. Not in the past two or three days. But tonight, she's sleeping. Which I love.
I'm about to go and watch a TV program, and she's coming with me as soon as she hears me standing.
I love her so much. Oh yes, I love cats best; but Dona...she came to me in a moment of my life when I needed a pet desperately. I grew up with animals. Cats, dogs, parrots, rabbits; and I'd been without a pet for the past two, almost three years. When she came home...all the stress I had from the past years disappeared. She healed me.
I don't mind about what she does, she's always there. That awful morning, so many weeks ago now, she was there, sitting by my side while I was crying, when I take a nap, she sleeps by my side. She loves to go for walks and loves to jump on me, so I can play with her.
*sigh*
I love my doggy, don't I?

Date: 2005-07-01 11:34 pm (UTC)It's so wonderful that you and Dona have such a good relationship. Even though she sometimes misbehaves, it's obvious that she knows you love her, and that she loves you back.
I've never had such a close relationship with a pet. In my family, pets were always around, birds, dogs, rabbits (no cats... until recently).
My grandmother always had a cat. Tammy was it's name. When I was a kid and I'd visit for the weekend, Tammy would stay away from me, except when my grandmother wasn't around. Then when my grandmother was maybe out in the garden, or upstairs, the cat would come to wherever I was, just to watch me. I of course mistook the gesture as an attempt to break the ice... no way. The cat just wanted to keep an eye on me.
At Christmas when I went home, I discovered that instead of the habitual dog, there is now a white parrot, and also a cat in the family home. The parrot paid no heed to me whatsoever. The cat resented me, I'm sure, and I had the impression that every time she came into a room and saw me, she was thinking "That human's still here? When is it going to leave?" Then she'd turn around and leave.
The family dog right now is a wild young thing that lives in the back garden, and walks along the outside window sills. Never seen a dog like that. He's always sitting in the porch, looking at the door, or in some place in the garden, looking at a window, or sitting on a window sill, looking into the kitchen.
The dog is the only pet who's name I remember, Growler... and yes, he growls and barks, but in the most playful way. He's probably the silliest dog I ever met, and I wouldn't mind getting to know him better. I remember his reaction when he saw me. He jumped up and down, barking wildly, like he was thinking "Oh wow, they've brought a new human for me to play with."
Needless to say, the cat was not impressed by me playing with Growler... Those two had a kind of cold war going, and were not allowed to be together. The garden belonged to the dog, and the house to the cat. When the dog was let in, the cat was safely hidden away.
Growler and me had some good fun, he's a funny dog, and I'm a funny human, I miss him. He'd be a nice pet, but he'd drive Ana crazy.
On my last day, the cat actually came and sat on the sofa beside me. We were all watching the third Harry Potter film on DVD... it had just come out, I believe. We were sitting there, and suddenly I noticed something white and fluffy sitting beside me. I didn't dare touch the animal, I just stayed still and continued watching the film.
Uff, my life with animals seems rather complicated, don't you think?
Having a pet is a tremendous responsibility... I wonder what rating out of ten my childhood pets would give me. No more than a six, I'd say.
Obviusly Dona would give you a ten.
Three cheers for Dona and her wonderful mistress!
Maybe when I'm old and grey I'll have a pet again. Let it be a shaggy dog like Growler, a silly fun-loving creature, just like me.
I remember getting back to the family home when I'd go shopping or whatever, and the kitchen was usually my first stop. I'd see Growler sitting on the window sill, looking in, kind of forlornly, and I'd close the kitchen door so the cat couldn't get in, and I'd smile at him. I can remember his ears perking up when he'd see me move to the back door that opens onto the porch, and he'd jump down as the door opened. Then he'd jump up on me like he was thinking "I love this human!"
I'd make a cup of tea for the two of us... yes, folks, this dog loves tea, in his dog-bowl, with bread.... Ugh. My sister told me he loves it, so I made tea for us a few times. "Does he take sugar?" I asked my sister, Jane, jokingly the first time I made tea for the dog and me. "Don't be silly." She responded with a smile.
That was six months ago already...
Thanks for the post, Marge. You've helped me remember something beautiful, and you've made me very happy. I hope some day we can sit down together and talk about pets, and books and things. I think we'll laugh a lot.

Date: 2005-07-04 11:02 pm (UTC)Going over there now... but it's a kind of lonely place, you know? Like an empty house. Yours is much more comfortable. But I'm like a guest who doesn't want to leave, or one of those neighbours who is always popping in for a cup of tea.
I hope you don't mind having me visit. Hehehe.
I love every word you write, and of course, I love you too.
